Green Exodus is interested in the long story of the lands we call home.
We were honoured to have as our first guest for the Green Exodus, John Snow, Traditional Land, Cultural and Environmental Specialist, Member of the Stoney Tribe, Treaty 7, and an ordained United Church Minister. John gifted us with more of the long story of the mountains and land of Banff and Canmore.
Tunnel Mountain was named for the initial route of the CPR, along the Bow River which would have required it to go through a tunnel in the mountain. Another quicker, less costly route was identified but the name stuck.
Members of the Stoney tribe would like to see the official name of the mountain returned to its Stoney name, Sacred Buffalo Guardian – a name rooted in the actual shape of the mountain and the belief that the mountain “actually acts as a guardian over the many different types of special waters, special herbs, medicines that grow in that area” .
